A PhotoSweeper alternative
PhotoSweeper is the app most people in this category find first, and it has been doing this job for over a decade. It reads your Photos library, your folders, your external drives, Lightroom Classic and Capture One, finds the near-identical shots in all of them, and sweeps a very large collection quickly. Photosteward does a much smaller version of the same job and disagrees with it about one thing: what should decide which shot you keep.
I wrote Photosteward, so read this the way you would read any comparison published by one of the two. The facts below come from PhotoSweeper's own page and its App Store listing, and you can check every one of them.

Choose PhotoSweeper if
- Your Mac is not brand new. PhotoSweeper runs on macOS 10.15 and on Intel. Photosteward needs macOS 26 and Apple Silicon and cannot run at all on anything older — that is eleven major releases of difference. This is the most common reason and it is not close.
- Your photos are not all in Photos. Folders, external drives, an old archive, a Lightroom Classic or Capture One catalogue: PhotoSweeper reads all of them. Photosteward sees the Apple Photos library and is blind to everything else.
- You want one fast pass over a very large collection. PhotoSweeper is built to sweep a whole drive in one go and is quick at it. Photosteward works through a library gradually in the background, which is a different thing and slower to finish.
- You want the controls. How close counts as similar, how results are sorted, what happens to movies and edited photos, batch renaming, locking what must never be touched. Photosteward has almost none of these and is not going to grow them.
Choose Photosteward if
- Your problem is specifically an Apple Photos library. Years of the same moment photographed eight times over, and a Duplicates album that leaves all of it alone.
- You want the picture judged, not the file. When there are faces in a group, Photosteward weighs those first — eyes open, everyone smiling, more faces clearly visible — and only then framing and sharpness. A group with nobody in it is judged on the picture alone.
- You would rather not remember to do it. It lives in the menu bar and looks through new photos as they arrive, waiting for mains power and standing down in Low Power Mode.
- You want to be told why. Every flagged photo carries its reason in plain language, and one keystroke keeps a different photo instead.
- Your library is on iCloud with “Optimise Mac Storage”. Grouping runs from the previews already on your Mac; originals are fetched only for the groups that need a closer look, in batches, and it asks before the first big download.
The disagreement worth understanding
PhotoSweeper's settings are not clutter. They are the price of its reach. An app that has to serve a Photos library, a folder of scans, an external drive of holiday photographs and two professional catalogues cannot assume what a good picture is — the answer is genuinely different in each of those places — so it does the honest thing and lets you say.
Photosteward is narrower on purpose, and being narrow is what earns it the right to have an opinion. It only ever looks at one kind of collection: a family photo library, where the difference between four shots of the same moment is usually who blinked. Because that is the only case it handles, it can score for that case and ship with almost nothing to configure.
Neither of those is the better answer in general. If you want to decide what counts as a keeper, PhotoSweeper lets you and Photosteward will not. If you would rather not have to, that is what the narrower app is for.
Questions
Is Photosteward a drop-in replacement for PhotoSweeper?
No, and it is worth being clear about that. PhotoSweeper runs on eleven macOS releases Photosteward cannot, it runs on Intel Macs, and it reads folders, external drives, Lightroom Classic and Capture One — none of which Photosteward can see at all. If any of those matter to you, PhotoSweeper is the better tool and this page is not trying to talk you out of it.
They cost about the same. What is the difference for the money?
A narrower tool that runs itself and judges the picture rather than the file, against a mature one that reads five kinds of source and lets you set the matching yourself. That is the whole trade, and it is not obviously the right one: if what you want is control over the matching and a fast sweep across every drive you own, PhotoSweeper is the better app for you and this page will not pretend otherwise.
Can I run both?
Yes. They do not interfere: Photosteward only ever adds photos to an album of its own and deletes nothing on its own, and PhotoSweeper does not read that album. Run PhotoSweeper over your folders and archives, and leave Photosteward on the Photos library.
Does Photosteward delete anything by itself?
No. Flagging moves and changes nothing. You press the button, macOS asks once more with its own dialog, and what you delete waits in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
What has Photosteward's judgement actually been measured against?
A reference corpus of 31 folders and 88 of the maker's own family photographs, with the winner named in each filename. It grouped 24 of the 31 exactly, with no false merges, and picked the same photo as the person in 25 of the 30 folders where a winner was named. That is one person's library and a floor rather than a promise about yours — the five it got wrong are listed in the repository beside the human's own reasons.
