A NameQuick alternative
NameQuick is good, and it is the app most people in this category find first. It reads invoices, scans and screenshots, names them, and watches folders so new files get handled as they arrive. NameGnome does the same job and disagrees with it about two things: what you should have to set up, and whether you should approve each name.
I wrote NameGnome, so read this the way you would read any comparison published by one of the two. The facts below come from NameQuick's own pages and you can check every one of them.
Side by side
| Feature | NameQuick | NameGnome |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Mac and Windows | macOS only — Apple Silicon, macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later |
| Setup before the first rename | Your own API key (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini) or a local model via Ollama / LM Studio — or a managed cloud subscription | None. It uses the model already in macOS |
| Price | $69 once, self-managed with your own key; or managed cloud from $12/month | Free — pay what you want, from CHF 9 |
| Before a file is renamed | Automatic, or a review mode where you approve each suggestion | Always automatic. No preview, no per-file confirmation |
| After a file is renamed | Post-rename rules, templates | Every rename in a history, each one click from undone |
| Watch folders | Yes | Yes |
| Model choice | Yours — swap providers whenever you like | Apple's, plus one optional 500 MB photo model |

Choose NameQuick if
- You are on Windows, an Intel Mac, or a macOS older than 26. NameGnome cannot run at all on any of those. This is the most common reason and it is not close.
- You want to see each name before it is applied. NameQuick has a review mode; NameGnome has no preview by design.
- Your documents are hard. A frontier model behind your own API key will read a bad scan better than a model that fits on a laptop.
- You want to choose and swap the model. NameQuick works with OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Ollama and LM Studio.
Choose NameGnome if
- You do not want to run an AI account to rename files. No key, no provider, no metering, nothing to install — the model is already part of macOS.
- You want it to just happen. Files are named as they land. Nothing queues up waiting for your attention, because there is nothing to approve.
- You would rather have undo than a checkpoint. Every rename is recorded and one click from being put back — including the ones you would have approved and then regretted.
- You want to pay what it is worth to you. Free to use, from CHF 9 if you decide it earns its keep.
The disagreement worth understanding
NameQuick's review mode and NameGnome's undo are answers to the same worry: what happens when the name is wrong. A preview stops it before it happens. Undo fixes it afterwards.
The reason NameGnome picked undo is that it runs in the background. A review queue only works if you visit it, and a folder watcher that fills a queue you never open has quietly stopped doing its job. So NameGnome makes the conservative choice at the other end instead: a file it is not confident about is left alone, untouched, with its original name. Two outcomes, never three.
Neither app moves your files or changes what is in them. If you would genuinely rather look at each name first, that is a real preference and NameQuick serves it better.
Questions
Is NameGnome a drop-in replacement for NameQuick?
No, and it is worth being clear about that. NameQuick runs on Windows, lets you choose the model, and offers a review step before anything is renamed. If any of those three matter to you, NameQuick is the better tool and this page is not trying to talk you out of it.
Why does NameGnome have no preview?
Because it watches folders in the background, and a queue of decisions waiting for you is a chore that grows while you are not looking. The design is that a file NameGnome is not confident about is left alone entirely — so there are two outcomes, a good name or the original name, never a wrong one you have to catch. Everything it does rename lands in a history with Undo beside it.
Is undo really as safe as approving each name?
It is a different trade, not a strictly better one. Approving catches a bad name before it happens; undo catches it afterwards, including the name you approved and then regretted, which a preview cannot. What neither does is move or alter the file — the contents are untouched and the file stays where it is.
What does NameGnome cost?
Nothing to use. It asks once a month, and that notice covers the folder and history panes until you dismiss it; renaming never stops. Paying is voluntary, starts at CHF 9, and silences the notice for good.
Can I run both?
Yes, but do not point them at the same folder — two watchers renaming the same arriving file will fight, and the loser's history will not match what is on disk.
